Fall & Winter  November in the Music Classroom:  Students in Kindergarten - 2nd Grade  have been growing their rhythmic skills, concepts of a steady beat and collaboration, using call and response, singing, dancing and reciting familiar rhymes.  Students used a listening map of symbols depicting,  Camille Saint-Saens', "Danse Macabre" to comprehend the story that the orchestra was sharing. Transitioning from the concept of story through sound by adding lyrics/words, students explored  song within the genre of Musical Theatre . Students watched a day in the life of "Genie", from Disney's musical production of "Aladdin" and while listening to music from Disney's Broadway production of "The Lion King", students roared and roamed the classroom as jungle animals!        During the second half of November students explored freedom through song story found in Jazz . Welcome back to what has been a wonderful year in Music so far at SCS! In the music classroom we have been creating a caring classroom culture. We are recognizing the unique talents, traditions and acquired knowledge everyone contributes to our learning environment.  Kindergarten - 2nd Grade classes used our " Stuffies " (stuffed animals!) to help us ease in! Each student had their own  Stuffy to  help them sing "Wheels On The Bus", "The Teddy Bear Song" and "Johnny Has One Friend". Musical scavenger hunts facilitated familiarity with our learning environment in the music classroom. Students drew pictures to show what makes each of us special on the inside and then went outside to listen for all of the sounds around us in nature.  We are singing & dancing! So far our repertoire includes: "Down By the Bay", "Frog In The Meadow" and songs from other cultures, such as "Ram Sam Sam" and "Obwisana Sa Nana"

I would like to celebrate the outstanding learning that is happening in music class so far this year! Students are working together to create a respectful, collaborative classroom culture that allows them to share their creative thoughts and musical experiences.  Together we have explored the Expressive Qualities of music, dynamics, (piano and forte) and tempo, (presto and largo). We have discovered how to combine varying instrumentation and expressive qualities to help us to create a story through song.  Student's have listened to Saint Saens' "Danse Macabre" and Stravinsky's, "Firebird Suite" to help facilitate the comprehension of these concepts.  Listening map for Camille Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" Artwork depicting Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" In PK - 2 we worked together to create listening maps aligning the pictures from our story with instrumental or digital sounds to tell a story through song. We have recently begu

I am looking forward to playing, singing and creating music with the amazing Elementary students here at Shelburne Community School. The beginning of the year in music has been a wonderful celebration of being back in the classroom together!  In my classroom I encourage creative 'outside of the box' thinking, that inspires new ways of including every student's authentic voice and fosters the growth of unique classroom environments. Subsequently, every music class shares a unique community culture from which we grow ourselves as individuals. We are discovering how culture integrates with music around the world.  To help us with this idea, we are integrating literature and song by reading the book shown above by Rafael Lopez, "We've Got The Whole World In Our Hands".  Across my PK - 4th grade classes, we are developing basic concepts of rhythm using conversational solfege and improvisation. Individual classes are working on the following concepts:  Kindergarten
